HARBOR RIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL, FINAL PHASE

Peninsula School District

Harbor Ridge Middle School—Final Phase completes improvements to HRMS that were originally promised in 1991. The majority of the facility had been improved in 2002. Those improvements, however, did not provide for the integration of the remaining music/shop building into the campus plan. McGranahan Architects developed two alternate solutions, one requiring changes to City of Gig Harbor design ordinances in order to be permitted. The Board selected that option, and worked collaboratively with the City Council to achieve a remarkable community asset on time and within budget. Construction of the project was phased in order to meet the limitations of the permitting schedule.

The addition integrates seamlessly with the 2002 project. The outdoor plaza provides both an exit path and an outdoor addition to the existing Commons. The wood shop is concealed behind the new auxiliary gym. The two-story addition provides a new entrance for expanded bus loading and additional staff and community parking. The addition provide a new entrance for students arriving at the facility. Treatment of storm drainage becomes a landscaping design feature in the “rain garden” provided at the entrance to the new wing. The auxiliary gym provides a venue for community theater.
